Obituary of Dr. Hassan Sadaghiani

Please share a memory of Dr. Hassan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dr. Hassan Sadaghiani, 83, of Port Jervis passed away peacefully at home on Sunday August 20, 2023 after an extended illness.

Born in Kermanshah, Iran on April 22, 1940, he was the eldest of eight children of Baghom Hashemi and Ali Sadaghiani.

When he was six, his family moved to Tehran and there he attended grade school, high school, and was one in the inaugural med-school class of the National University of Iran, graduating in 1970.  He came to the US in 1972 for an internship at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY, which is where he met his wife-to-be, Cathy May.  He did his OB-GYN residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, as well as a Fellowship.  He obtained a medical license in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and was a Board-certified Fellow in OB-GYN.  In 1977, he returned to Iran, where he went into private OB-GYN practice and served as a University Associate Professor, teaching residents at the largest maternity hospital in Iran.  Eight months later, Cathy joined him and they were married in Tehran on February 10, 1978.  They lived there until August, 1980, surviving the days of the Iranian Revolution, as well as the taking of the American hostages.   They returned to the US for the birth of their son, Amir, with every intention to return to Iran, but the Iran-Iraq War broke out and he was being recruited to go to the war zone and his mother said it would not be safe.  He then tried in vain to get a position in the New York metropolitan area, but the anti-Iranian sentiment of the time was too strong.  A friend suggested he come to Port Jervis and here Dr. Daniel Schultz offered him a position in Doctors Sunnyside Hospital.  Dr. Hassan started a private practice and in 1982, he was recruited by Drs. Weiner and Brunn to join Port Jervis OBS-GYN, which expanded to include Women’s Health Specialists in Milford, both of which were eventually taken over by Bon Secours Community Medical Care Group.  Dr. Hassan was a well-respected member of the Medical Staff of St. Francis/Mercy Community/BonSecours Hospital and spent many years on the Executive Board of that hospital.  He also held privileges at Orange Regional Hospital.  On June 30, 2005 he delivered his last baby and spent the next ten years in Gynecology and Gynecologic Surgery, retiring completely in July, 2014.

Dr. Hassan and Cathy traveled extensively after his retirement, visiting 58 countries on six continents.  He lived a good life and told his doctors at Sloan Kettering that there was “nothing left on his bucket list.”

In addition to his wife, Dr. Hassan is survived by his loving children, Amir Hassan Sadaghiani of Goshen, NY and Maryam K. Sadaghiani of Long Island City, NY, three beloved grandchildren Catherine, Darius and Anthony Sadaghiani of Scotchtown, NY, siblings Farah, Shooku, Zohereh, Abbas and Mohsen Sadaghiani of Tehran, Hossein Sadaghiani of California and many heart-broken nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.  Along with his parents, he was pre-deceased by his beloved in-laws Julie and Hank May, his brother Reza, and nephews Javad and Saeed Sadaghiani and John Hince, Jr.

The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Robert Dinsmore and Dr. Gopal Shah for their extraordinary care and support these last four years.

Interment will be private at the Garden of Islam in Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, New Jersey.
