Obituary of Maira Lugo

It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of Maira Lugo at the age of 54 on October 26, 2023. Maira Lugo was born in the Bronx, New York, where she lived for almost her entire life, on February 6, 1969 to Lourdes and José Lugo, migrants from Ponce, Puerto Rico. A proud Puerto Rican and Bronxite, Maira was fierce, funny, friendly, giving, compassionate, caring, warm, unique, and highly intelligent. Full of enthusiasm and knowledge about topics ranging from Puerto Rican culture and cooking to fashion and friendship, Maira was always quick to share what she knew with anyone and everyone who asked.

 

The second of four daughters, Maira graduated from St. Pius High School in 1987 and went on to work as clerical staff before moving into being a childcare provider for babies and toddlers, a profession that brought her immense amounts of joy. In addition to being a childcare provider, Maira was a dedicated Titi and Godmother to biological and chosen family alike and a loving mother to her three children. She was an incredible sister and sisterfriend, and all who were on the receiving end of her love benefited greatly.

 

Maira is survived by her parents, Lourdes and José Lugo; her sisters Carmen (Luis), Kathryn, and Jessica; her children Miguel, Ami, and Richard; and her partner of 26 years, Richie. Great aunt of Zoe, Bela and Eva. Her many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, extended family, chosen family, and friends fondly remember Maira as one of their favorite people.

 

Maira was brave in the face of her cancer diagnosis and will forever be remembered in our hearts for the affection, encouragement, humor, and kindness she showered on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and goodness that we can all strive to emulate.
