Daniel A. Kavanagh of Huguenot, died peacefully on December 25, 2024.
Daniel A. Kavanagh was born on February 23, 1940 in Bayshore hospital on Long Island, approximately 40 hours prior to his twin sister, Lee, who was born late in the day on February 24.
The two maintained a close relationship until Daniel’s passing on Christmas Day 2024. Daniel's childhood was spent helping out on the family farm and of course, attending school. In high school he competed in track, track and field, and wrestling. Upon graduation he attended SUNY Farmingdale where he studied Drafting and Mechanical Drawing. As he neared completion of his educational program, Daniel received an invitation to serve in the US Army. In lieu of accepting this invitation, he went to the recruiting office and voluntarily joined the US Army. He attended basic at Ft. Dix, NJ, AIT at Ft. Devens, MA, for signal maintenance/cryptography. He was assigned in Germany to the Army Security Agency. Just prior to joining the Army, he met Theresa DeLeo of Elmont, NY and the two dated until his discharge from the Army in 1965.
Daniel and Theresa married on September 11, 1965 and remained married until Theresa’s passing on October 25, 2018. The two were married for 53 years. Daniel, upon discharge from the Army, took a job with Grumman Aerospace where he worked as an electrical inspector on the space program. He worked on every Lunar Module that set down upon the Lunar surface. At the completion of the space program, he was laid off from Grumman and took a job with New York telephone in 1970, where he remained employed until retirement in 1993, ultimately from Verizon who had acquired New York Telephone.
Daniel and Theresa are survived by their Son, Joseph F. who was born in 1968. They lived distant to Joseph due to his career in military medicine and later family commitments. Daniel was deeply devoted to his two Grandchildren, John V. born in 2000 and Katherine E. Born 2004. Daniel was a lifelong Catholic and was very active in St. Mary’s parish in Port Jervis and previously St. Vincent De Paul parish in Elmont, NY.
Daniel is remembered as intensely involved and dedicated to his faith, his country, and his family and will be sorely missed.
